We look at how colour is used by nature: bright garish colours draw attention, perhaps for a short time for a single specific purpose; sometimes permantly as a warning; and often muted pastel tones to merge into the background.
The colour combination for office pictures needs to take into account the existing decor. That is why we use a specialist framer to mount our work: Ken has the skills plus a wider range of mountings and moldings than we would want to hold and uses non-reflective glass for all glazed items. When adding to an existing collection, we will try to match the moldings. For a new installation we will take the colours and ethos of the locations as they are.
The duration the picture will be in place, as well as the context of the location, makes a difference: in an office where the picture is to be a semi permanent feature, a pleasing overal 'image' is needed. I like to use natural wood, perhaps with a pastel shade. If the picture is intended to be anywhere for only a short duration, such as during a 'flash innovation', or other dynamic event, a more provocative colour combination may be used. Here I might use a strong primary colour. A restroom or shower area would call for something white-and-chrome plus being sealed against moisture.
